Abstract

The article treats about discourses in the panamanian press about the feminine condition, feminism and suffragism between 1911 and 1922, a period of time that preceded the birth of the first feminist organizations in Panama in 1923, the National Feminist Party and the National Society for Progress of the woman. Characteristics of Panamanian feminism were its early organization coinciding almost with the creation of the National State and the construction of the Interoceanic Canal, and the influence that had both the international feminist movement echoes and the worker's movements and the revolutions that took place in Europe and America.

In the aforementioned years, were heard the firsts voices that demanded a new role for women in society, as well as those that opposed these changes. This paper studies the opinions and arguments for and against claims of feminist, and the presence of Spanish and Latin American authors in the Panamanian publications.
